Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium)

Symbolizing the Sins with Nature

Pennyroyal is a herb associated with peace and strength. It is one of the herbs of Demeter, the Greek harvest Goddess. Like all Goddesses, Demeter is complex. In one of her myths she is the expression of lost and sadness. When her daughter Persephone was stolen into the Underworld by Hades, Demeter embarked on solitary journey in search of her. Nothing could relieve her desperation and sadness, for Persephone was spring itself and the Earth was barren without her. Demeter’s sorrow rises out of love, her aloneness: an initiation that precedes change. Through strength and strategy she eventually reaches out to the other deities and finds help. Persephone is found and returns to Earth bringing spring and new growth.
